The title of this painting is – just like “protection of the goddess” – inspired by the Greek myth about Iphigenia who is rescued from being sacrificed. Artemis intervenes and carries her away. Subsequently she finds herself in the temple of the goddess on a remote island which becomes for her a place of salvation but also of imprisonment. This story has accompanied me from my childhood on and does so especially now, that I have lived on an island for the past few years.
